Optimizing Operational Excellence

Across industries, today’s Operations Executives need to develop strategies in product leadership, operational excellence, and customer intimacy while improving production and service delivery processes.

For the strategy development teams, the focus is in analyzing the capabilities of operations in light of the firm’s evolutionary or revolutionary strategies. For the process improvement teams, the focus is on employing analytical tools and methods to help operations executives enhance the performance of their departments.

Working in tandem with your IT, Audit, Compliance, Regulatory, and Finance colleagues, you can deploy KR to define opportunities and problems, gather data, optimize solutions, and implement needed change.

Define

Illustrate the opportunities for change. KR provides the most complete inventory and visualization of an entire application in a single model. As operational requirements evolve and change, the ability to analyze and update the application or portfolio of applications to keep pace with them needs to evolve as fast—or faster. KR will illustrate for you:

  • Immediate identification and understanding of those elements that make up the operational activities, such as Business/Operational terms, rules, and transactions;
  • Rapid updates to the current state of implementation and future state requirements, including the gap and resources needed to make changes; and
  • Immediate understanding of obsolete operational activities, and the impact of removing them from the application (or portfolio of applications).

Gather

Aggregate the answers to your complex operational challenges. KR enables business analysts to identify the transactions both at the application and at the portfolio level to verify the execution of transaction path and data lineage to ensure data integrity—critical to finance, logistics, audit, and other operations.

Optimize

Advance your operations’ visibility. KR can provide visibility into the execution path of transactions and the data lineage by providing the step-by-step execution of control flow and data flow as they interact and shape operational data implemented within the applications. An example that illustrates this across industries is the operational integrity of the general ledger: Client requires an understanding of general ledger recordings for accuracy and integrity of accounting.

KR can provide the transaction trace and data lineage from the point of user action, which may trigger the activity to when the general ledger recording is executed. This trace enables the financial organization to keep pace with accuracy of accounting and audits to not only verify accuracy of recording, but also to keep pace with application changes (operational, technical, compliance-based) and their impact on recording.

Implement

Master Operational Change. KR provides an unique set of analysis activities called differential analysis (DA) (aka versioning). As the operational needs change, so does the application. As the application evolves, DA can be used to quickly analyze the implementation of change (baseline vs. update) to ensure accuracy of change, impact of change(s) to other critical operations, and impact on audit or compliance requirements. These changes can then be quickly evaluated for gaps in test coverage to ensure dynamic testing (test cases coverage). The inter-relationship among operational terms, rules, and transactions can be understood on-demand, thus allowing the operational community and business architecture community to keep pace with the current state, and plan for future requirements.
